LIVERPOOL, England – A 12-year-old girl has been found dead in the centre of Liverpool in an assault believed to have been carried out by a man carrying a knife, police said.
The unnamed victim was attacked in the city’s historic centre at around 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday evening. She suffered serious injuries in the assault, which left her with a single stab wound to the chest. She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The suspect is in police custody. A manhunt is underway for the second suspect, who was described as a large-build white man, aged in his 30s.
Both men were wearing dark blue tracksuits. Police say the man with the knife was carrying a blue and white floral carrier bag.
Detective Superintendent James Dalton said: “We are carrying out an extensive search, with officers carrying out house-to-house enquiries and both armed and unarmed officers canvassing the area. We are also carrying out forensic enquiries.
“We have arranged a local vigil in a bid to bring as much normality as possible to the area while we carry out the investigations. We are determined to catch those responsible for this and do not want any more young people to die.”
